You cannot add effects to a Gap in FCPX. A slug is blank video. A “gap” is a spacer.
Watch the video below for an example how to create a custom lower third using Video Slug. (In the early days of FCPX, when this generator was made, transitions could not be added to gaps either, but this has since changed.)
