SC iPhone 12 (Pro) Model and Effect

Apply SC iPhone 12 directly to (full screen) media (video, images, generators and titles with “backgrounds”*).

There is a built in OnScreen Control. Make sure the iPhone effect is selected in the inspector and click on the iPhone in the viewer. You should see a 3D Text control appear in the Viewer. With this, you can rotate the iPhone directly onscreen. You will also see an outline region surrounding the iPhone model. Click anywhere in that region and you can drag the phone to position it (you cannot use this method to keyframe position — you will have to manually control the Position parameters in the inspector for keyframing… or use the Animation controls provided.)

There is a Scale parameter. In general, use the top level scale value (but you can dial down the disclosure triangle and do weird things to phone if you like.)

The Media Position parameter controls the relative positioning of the media in the phone. This will not affect the position of the *original media* (which can be shown simultaneously with the content on the iPhone screen.)

Media Rotation can be used to reorient the screen media (again — does not affect the original as background.)

Media Scale is used to fit/refit the media on the iPhone screen.

The Show Background option allows you to toggle the original storyline media on or off.

There is a large section at the bottom of the parameter list dealing with ANIMATIONS.

Animations occur **relative** to the onscreen positions (controlled by the top parameters). If you move the iPhone to a starting point and apply these animations, they will begin from this initial position. (You can keyframe an animation and the animations section will continually add their values to the keyframed “arrangement”.)

Start Time % and End Time % are in percent of clip length. End Time is marked from the beginning of the clip.

To animate the iPhone across the entire clip’s length, set Start Time % to 0 and End Time % to 100%. If Start Time is > End Time, any parameter changes in the Animations section will occur immediately at the start time (get it?). [Generally not recommended, but if you need an instantaneous change, this is one way to do it.]

If Start Time and End Time are 100%, you can disable animation settings while you work on something else.

The Linear → Accelerate will allow you to alter the interpolation of the animation. Not quite as flexible as easing, but suitable in most cases.

I’m sure you can figure out the Start and End parameters for XYZ position and XYZ Rotations (“Angle”).

The last two parameters allow you to set a “bounce” effect in the animation. Bounce Amount is how far past the End settings will go (relative to the animation speed and Acceleration setting) and the Bounces parameter is how many times it will go in the opposition direction and rebound.  If Bounces is less than one, the animation will go past the End setting and ease back to the End setting (more or less — acceleration may add a little bit more rebounding.)

*More advanced applications:

I mentioned adding iPhone 12 to titles with backgrounds. You can get around this limitation by using an “Adjustment Layer” title over a Basic Title. One is provided with the download called SC iPhone Clone Layer (to be installed as a Title). It will provide a “full screen” aspect for the phone effect (you will find that any media that is not full screen will have “cropping” issues at the edges of the original media – for example, applying a portrait format clip will result in not being able to move the iPhone effect beyond the lateral edges of the media. Adding an adjustment layer fills in that extra missing media (and you won’t need to use a Compound Clip.)

You can add media (with alpha) between a clip in the storyline and the adjustment layer with the iPhone effect added. For example, Basic Titles between the storyline and the Adjustment Layer is an excellent way to add text into the iPhone effect along with the background media. (Technique used in the demo video below.)
